About the Artist
Tom Kaus is a woodworking artist known for transforming reclaimed wood into meticulously crafted geometric art pieces. Working from his carport studio in Jamestown, NM, Tom brings discarded materials to life with an eye for precision and sustainability.
Artistic Journey and Process
Tom’s journey began with over 75 pallets and salvaged wood, along with a donated table saw and miter saw. His process involves cutting 1-inch-thick boards into strips, reorienting the surface to double the area, and creating various shapes—squares, triangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms. Each shape is hand-cleaned, stained, and finished with a water-based polyurethane, resulting in highly polished, intricate compositions. His larger works can contain thousands of these shapes, crafted into portraits, animals, sports logos, and more.
Exhibitions and Achievements
In the summer of 2024, Tom submitted several pieces to the Bi-County Fair (McKinley/Cibola), where he earned five blue ribbons, showcasing the appeal and craftsmanship of his unique creations.
Current Work
From his carport studio, Tom continues to expand his collection, with new themes and designs that celebrate both sustainability and artistic precision.
