6th Annual Artist Challenge

Deadline to apply: Wednesday, November 22
CHALLENGE OVERVIEW
Artists will be challenged to create a total of 7 artworks over the course of 6 weeks.
- Part 1: Artists will create six 8″ x 8″ canvases according to “surprise” themes. A new theme will be announced by email each Wednesday, and artists will have one week to complete to an 8″ x 8″ artwork, due the following Wednesday.
- Part 2: Artists will create a “Wild Card” seventh artwork of any size (not to exceed 3ft wide) and subject during the Challenge. These “Wild Card” artworks will be judged for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, with cash prizes awarded to winners.
CHALLENGE TIMELINE
The Challenge will take place from Wednesday, December 27, 2023 to Wednesday, February 7, 2024.
- Canvas pick-up: Wednesday, December 20 from 1 – 6pm
- Challenge start date/first theme announced: Wednesday, December 28
- Canvas due dates:
- Wednesday, January 3
- Wednesday, January 10
- Wednesday, January 17
- Wednesday, January 24
- Wednesday, January 31
- Wednesday, February 7 (all artworks due)
- “Wild Card” artwork due: Wednesday, February 7
- Show Opening: Saturday, February 10, times TBD
- “Wild Card” winners announced: Saturday, February 10
- Show Dates: February 10 – March 2
- Artwork pick-up: Wednesday, March 6
ELIGIBILITY
- Artists of all backgrounds, styles, and levels of experience are encouraged to apply.
- All 2D media accepted.
- One spot will be reserved for a youth artist.
PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES
- Selected artists will each be provided with six 8″ x 8″ canvas boards to use for the purposes of the Challenge.
- Artists may use their own/alternative substrates, but the completed artworks must be able to be hung on the wall using thumbtacks or nails and in a grid pattern.
- Artworks must not exceed 8″ tall by 8″ wide and must not be more than 1″ in depth.
- Artists can sell their 8″ x 8″ Challenge artworks at ART123 Gallery for $50 – $75 each. “Wild Card” artworks may be sold for any artist-determined price. (Note: gallupARTS takes a 20% commission on non-Member Artist sales.)

Submit the following information via e-mail (assistant@gallupARTS.org) or letter (123 W. Coal Ave. Gallup, NM 87301 / drop-off using the mail slot on 2nd Street):
- Name and contact information (email, phone number, mailing address)
- Short artist biography/statement
- Reason you would like to participate in the Challenge
- 3 – 5 work samples (no originals!)
- Website/social media (if applicable)
